We came back from our vacation mid-week last week, and jumped straight back in to the regular full time work routine, which, combined with the crazy jet-lag that you get from traveling to a place half way around the world, caused things around the house to get a little messy and backed up… When you’re an adult, things don’t stop for you to recover from your vacation… So on Saturday morning, it was time for me to step up, and get on with adulting… which in this case meant getting my lazy ass off the couch and doing some household chores… (Have you read the book Adulting by Kelly Williams Brown? Or read her blog? She’s hilarious! If you haven’t, you should…)

Of course, I decided that my motivation for getting up would be that I could blog about it… and share how messy my house was, and how easy it was to tidy up… Which brought me to discover an unpublished post from months and months ago sitting in my drafts… it was about decluttering and tidying my kitchen from back when I was doing that 31 day clutter free challenge… that I only got to day 9 on… So, now you will have the joy of seeing a bit of that… and a bit of my Saturday…
First up, I needed to clean up my nest… also known as the couch…
It didn’t take too long to clean up really… but I think it made quite a difference in how “adult” my living room looks… What do you think?

Day 10 of the 31 day clutter free challenge was kitchen counters, and at the time, I had been pretty diligent about keeping the counters clean in the kitchen. It wasn’t perfect… but not too bad either… But the window sill by the sink had a few random things on it that I put away, recycled or donated.

Of course, let’s just have a quick peek at what the kitchen looked like on Saturday morning…

Not much of a difference really, but things needed tidying up… Dishes washed… And afterwards…

Much more “adult” when all the dishes are clean…
Back when I was writing the original post about decluttering the kitchen counters, I decided to tackle the fridge as part of the decluttering. Not the inside, but the outside… It has pretty much stayed the same, with a few new school photos of the nieces and nephews, so I didn’t take any new photos… but here’s what I did to declutter it months ago…

Sorry for all the blacked out stuff in the picture… I’m still trying to keep this blog anonymous, and since most of those pictures and info are not my own to share anyway, I figure I should be considerate and black it out…
Anyway, I took everything off the top of the fridge, and everything off the front of the fridge, and went through them.
Stale cheerios got thrown out… nobody eats them in our house…
The little cooler that I got for free from the liquor store that only fits a 6-pack and doesn’t really even hold enough for lunch… in the donate pile…
My Canucks lunch box that I had forgotten about… is coming out of retirement… It’s a much nicer lunch container than a stained and bulky cloth grocery bag…
From the front of the fridge, I took whatever papers that were important to be kept and filed them away. The faded artwork from the nieces and nephews was recycled, and I have requested new artwork… random papers that are no longer required have been recycled. And then I put back the important ones… and some of the photos that I like to keep up there of the family. (Again, sorry for the blacked out photo…)
Anyway, back to my Saturday… After my morning of adulting, I decided to make myself a heathy lunch… You know as a responsible adult, healthy eating is important!

But in reality, I needed salad dressing in order to actually eat that many veggies…

And my chicken obviously needed a healthy dollop of aioli too…

So much for my uber-healthy lunch…
So, yup… a bit of a random post for the first Tuesday of February… My real-life struggles with adulting…
Do you struggle with the things you are “supposed” to do as an adult?
The lunch still looks healthy to me! Yum!

I guess it is healthier than some alternatives, but I’m pretty sure that pile of aioli is just a big pile of fat. 🙂

Yes, ugh, so much struggle. I think eventually it becomes easier. I’ve been “adulting” for a decade now, and I can definitely say I take a lot more pride in housewifery than I used to. I saw this title at the book store the other day called “The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck” – it definitely on my reading list now, and I thought you would enjoy it, too!

Thanks for the book recommendation. I found it in the online library catalog, so I’m on the wait list for it now. I hope adulting gets easier… I can only imagine the struggle with two little ones running around as well…

Haha I have SO MUCH trouble adulting (and I’m totally going to have to check out that book/blog because it seems on point with my life). I am the worst about clutter and even housework in general. I swear I’m still a 10 year old living in a 29 year old’s body… But, I think this post gave me the kick in the pants I needed to go put away the laundry I folded 3 days ago. Thanks!

Hahaha! My laundry is sitting on top of the dryer… mostly folded…
I totally get the 10 year old… but I think I might be a stubborn 11 year old. Haha!

Thanks! I knew I was going to take a picture for the blog… that’s the only reason I spent so much time making it look nice… My meals don’t normally look that good.

Beautiful lunch! I’ve decluttered most of the house except the kitchen. It’s too daunting. We have SO MANY appliances and wares for our many hobbies … most of them live on top of the kitchen cabinets which looks terrible!! Everything in your home looks all tidy and clean now 🙂

Thanks! But, I’m just not showing you the messy parts! There are spaces in my house that are so filled with clutter… piles of papers… ugh… It’s tough when you have so many interests that require stuff and things… I can only imagine all the stuff that you’d have for brewing beer and keeping your worms and all the other impressive homesteading stuff you do!
